Li stood at the threshold of his home, his long, thin nose wrinkling at the scent of iron filling the air. His heart thumped erratically against his ribs, his mouth going dry at the eerie stillness of the living room. Toys were scattered all over the floor, blocks lined in a row, just like Timmy would have done, except --

( Except it was past bedtime, and the toys were still /out/. )

The smell of fresh cut grass hit him first -- probably because his face was buried against the earth, Saito realized, as he moved his neck and felt the grass brush against his cheek. His body felt off, like his legs weren’t quite connected to his torso. Light filtered through his eyelids -- which felt completely wrong.

( I apologize ahead of time for triggers. Saito's not a pleasant character. )

A short story I wrote for writerverse's Table of Doom challenge. The prompt? Waking Dreams. Has a bit of a horror story feel and it was required to do it in second person POV. I'm kinda proud of it.

Your eyes snap open, the dark expanse of the ceiling above you reminding you that you are, in fact, in your room.
